The Moon finishes its transit of Aquarius at 8:54, at which time it moves into Pisces. The Pisces Moon is compassionate, sensitive, giving, and wise at its best and noncommittal or avoidant when challenged. It’s a good time to forgive and release, particularly with a trine aspect between the Sun and Neptune today. This transit brings a fluid, graceful theme to the day. We readily access our intuition, and we can be moved to help, support, or give of ourselves. We see people and life itself from a different perspective–one that not only allows for but finds beauty in differences. We seek and find inspiration. We would do well to de-emphasize some of our material concerns or interests, at least temporarily. However, we can lose some patience as the day advances with a Mercury-Uranus opposition coming into influence, occurring tomorrow morning. As well, a quincunx between Mars and Chiron this afternoon can leave us doubting the effectiveness of our assertions or efforts to go after what we want, which can lead to passive-aggressive behavior, defensiveness, or frustration. We can find it challenging to be both assertive and sensitive now, and possibly see-saw between one and the other. It can be difficult to assert ourselves effectively without provoking, annoying, or concerning others. The trick is to combine both sensitivity and directness instead of narrowing our choices to either/or.

US journalist detained in Myanmar jailed for 11 years

Yangon (AFP) - A Myanmar junta court on Friday sentenced an American journalist to 11 years in prison on charges of unlawful association, incitement against the military and breaching visa rules, his employer and lawyer said.
The military has squeezed the press since taking power in a February coup, arresting dozens of journalists critical of its crackdown on dissent, which has killed over 1,200 people according to a local monitoring group.
Danny Fenster, who had been working for local outlet Frontier Myanmar for around a year, was arrested in May as he tried to leave the country to see his family.
He was sentenced to 11 years for incitement, unlawful association and breaching visa rules, his lawyer Than Zaw Aung told AFP.
His client had not decided whether he would appeal, he added.
A junta spokesman did not respond to AFP’s request for comment.
Fenster, who has been held in Yangon’s Insein prison since he was detained, also faces charges of sedition and terrorism, which could see him jailed for life.
“Everyone at Frontier is disappointed and frustrated at this decision,” Frontier Myanmar said in a statement.
“We just want to see Danny released as soon as possible so he can go home to his family.”
Ming Yu Hah, Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for Campaigns said the ruling was “a reprehensible outcome in a case that has been deeply flawed from the start.”
- ‘Outrageous’ -
The sentencing was based on evidence from the junta-appointed information ministry that showed at the time of his arrest Fenster had been working at local outlet, Myanmar Now, which had its licence revoked shortly after the coup, Than Zaw Aung said.
Fenster’s team were barred from cross-examining the ministry’s permanent secretary, he said, and the court did not consider tax evidence that Fenster had already left the outlet and was working for Frontier.
Crisis Group Myanmar senior advisor Richard Horsey described the sentence as “outrageous”.
“It sends a message not only to international journalists… but also Myanmar journalists that reporting factually on the situation is liable to get them many many years in prison,” he told AFP.
He noted US diplomats were working to get him released.
“It will be resolved through diplomatic channels and hopefully very quickly,” he said.
“But obviously this sentence is a big setback to US efforts.”

The sentencing comes days after former US diplomat and hostage negotiator Bill Richardson met junta chief Min Aung Hlaing in the capital Naypyidaw, handing the increasingly isolated junta some rare publicity.
Richardson, declining to give further details, said the US State Department asked him not to raise Fenster’s case during his visit.
Fenster is believed to have contracted Covid-19 during his detention, family members said during a conference call with American journalists in August.
He last spoke with US consular officials by phone on October 31, State Department spokesman Ned Price said Monday.
Myanmar has been mired in chaos since a February coup, with the military trying to crush widespread democracy protests and stamp out dissent.
More than 1,200 people have been killed by security forces, according to a local monitoring group.
The press has also been squeezed as the junta tries to tighten control over the flow of information, throttling internet access and revoking the licences of local media outlets.
More than 100 journalists have been arrested since the putsch, according to Reporting ASEAN, a monitoring group.
It says 31 are still in detention.
The coup snuffed out Myanmar’s short-lived experiment with democracy, with civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi now facing a raft of charges in a junta court that could see her jailed for decades.

First rhino horn NFT sold at auction in South Africa

Cape Town (AFP) - A digital replica of a rhino horn sold at an auction in South Africa late Thursday, as conservationists tapped into the craze for NFTs to raise money to protect real rhinos.
Cape Town businessman Charl Jacobs paid 105,000 rand (6,850 dollars, 6,000 euros) for the digital horn, which he said he plans to place into a trust for his children.
“If worst-case scenario, if rhinos go into complete disarray then I would still own a rhino horn, because the NFT is a token of the physical rhino horn,” he told AFP.
Proceeds from the sale go to the private Black Rock Rhino conservancy, home to 200 rhinos that are able to breed while protected from poachers.
“We are doubling our population every four years. So it’s a really important conservation project,” said conservationist Derek Lewitton.
“But it costs a fortune. If you don’t want to get poached, you have to spend a ton in terms of manpower and security infrastructure. and this a way to help us fund that.”
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have made a huge splash among art collectors who have spent millions of dollars on digital drawings, music, and videos.
An NFT’s authenticity is certified by block-chain technology, which is considered immutable, making the digital objects something that can be bought and sold.
The NFT technology also allows a beneficiary to receive commissions from future sales, so if Jacobs sells his NFT in the future, Black Rock Rhino would receive a portion of that sale.
It’s legal to trade in real rhino horns within South Africa, but in this case, the original horn is locked away for safekeeping.
Poachers killed at least 249 rhinos in South Africa during the first six months of the year – 83 more than in the first half of 2020.
The animals are slaughtered for their horns, which are smuggled into Asia where they are highly prized for traditional and medicinal purposes.

Japan's Toshiba to split into three firms

Tokyo (AFP) - Storied Japanese conglomerate Toshiba will split into three companies, it said Friday, following a campaign by investors to boost the firm’s shares after a period of enormous upheaval.
The move is the first spin-off by a Japanese firm of Toshiba’s size and analysts said it could be a test case for other domestic conglomerates.
The plan approved by the board will spin two companies off from the rest of Toshiba’s operations within two years – one focused on infrastructure and the second on devices – with both eventually being listed.
“It is an extremely big change, but there is a chance for each business to achieve growth,” CEO Satoshi Tsunakawa told reporters.
“Toshiba has changed its form and evolved throughout its long history of over 140 years,” he added. “We have reached a conclusion that this strategic realignment is the best option.”
The plan must still be approved by shareholders, some of whom reportedly would have preferred a buyout, with a vote expected in the first quarter of 2022.
Toshiba said the move would allow each sector of its business faster decision-making and slimmer cost structures that would “deliver sustainable profitable growth and enhanced shareholder value”.
That is what investors pushing for the move are hoping, said LightStream Research analyst Mio Kato, who publishes on Smartkarma.
They want “moves to shake the company up and get investors to reevaluate it and hopefully get a higher share price,” he told AFP.
The decision caps a period of tumult at the firm, once a symbol of Japan’s advanced technological and economic power.
In June, shareholders voted to oust the board’s chairman after a series of scandals and losses, in a rare victory for activist investors in corporate Japan.
The move followed the damaging revelations of an independent probe that concluded Toshiba attempted to block shareholders from exercising their proposal and voting rights.
It also detailed how the firm had pursued an intervention from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to help sway a board vote.
- Japan test case? -
In April, an unexpected buyout offer from a private equity fund associated with then-CEO Nobuaki Kurumatani stirred uproar, with allegations it was intended to blunt the influence of activist investors.
Other offers emerged subsequently, and Kurumatani resigned in April, though he insisted it was not related to the buyout controversy.
Hideki Yasuda, an analyst with Ace Research Institute, said it would take time to assess the consequences of the split.
“Corporate value is maximised by individual segments working on their own, so the plan is a good one if you look at that aspect of it,” he told AFP.
But coordination between the business sectors could be hampered and “it’s conceivable that in reality their efficiency might decline as a whole,” he added.
Kato said the move also risks failing to address issues facing Toshiba, including governance reform, with management focused on responding to investor pressure instead.
“I think you still need probably another three, four years to really put Toshiba where it should be but I don’t think they’re willing to wait,” he said.
The firm’s shares ended the day 1.32 percent down at 4,872 yen, having fallen as much as 3.6 percent earlier in the day.
Yasuda said the move would be closely watched in Japan, with its success or failure likely to influence others.
“If it ends well, I think shareholder pressure may increase for other conglomerates to take similar steps. But if it fails, then business managers may feel that being conglomerates reduces risks.”
