The Sun is in Scorpio from October 23-November 21. The guiding principle of Scorpio is “I desire.” Scorpio is the sign of depth, intimacy, and extremes of feeling. Superficiality simply will not do with the Sun in Scorpio–we want to get to the bottom of matters. Mediocrity does not satisfy either. All that is hidden, taboo, secret, or suppressed interests us. In Libra, we strived towards equality and fairness. Scorpio, however, instinctively believes that life simply isn’t fair.
Scorpio’s energy is provocative, usually in a quiet way, as well as passionate, strong-willed, and intense. It can be an immensely healing and transformative energy. Jealousy, vindictiveness, beating a dead horse, and manipulative are some of the more negative expressions of Scorpio.

The Moon continues its transit of truth-seeking Sagittarius until 8:04 PM EST, after which it moves into structured Capricorn. With Mars in a minor square to Neptune today, we may believe the route to our desires is a roundabout one. There can be some disorganization or a desire to act upon an unrealistic fantasy or unusual impulse. It’s hard to know what we want and where we’re headed under this influence, and passive-aggressive behavior is possible, as we may not feel effective enough to take direct action or assert ourselves directly. It may be best to wait things out to see if a sudden feeling passes. Seeing holes or losing some confidence in our plans, desires, and pursuits can be more of a symptom of the need for a bit of inspiration or a well-deserved break than it is a sign that the plans are lacking. Of course, if there are flaws, adjustments may be necessary. Otherwise, we may need to rest or recuperate before pressing forward.

The Moon spends the day in Capricorn, and we pay more attention to our long-term goals and responsibilities. Although the Capricorn Moon encourages an appreciation of the tried-and-true or traditional, its trine to Uranus suggests we’re somewhat open to different methods. With a Chiron-Ceres aspect this morning, we’re learning from our experiences, particularly to do with love and attachments, and we enjoy helping people, teaching, and growing through our connections. Later today, a Mercury-Neptune minor square comes into influence, which can be somewhat disorienting. We tend to avoid confrontation with this transit, attempting to move around issues or otherwise taking an indirect approach. It’s not an ideal time for clear thinking and handling details.

Long lines of cars waited to cross the Canadian border into the US
New York (AFP) - Long lines formed at border crossings Monday as the United States reopened to foreign visitors vaccinated against Covid-19, ending 20 months of restrictions that separated families, hobbled tourism and strained diplomatic ties.
From Rainbow Bridge at the US-Canada border to Mexico’s Tijuana crossing at San Ysidro, California, cars, motor homes and masked pedestrians clogged entry points before dawn as they sought eagerly anticipated reunions with family members and friends.
At airports in Europe, passengers queued excitedly to board planes bound for American cities, while those entering the country by land – some seen lugging suitcases and pushing bag-filled strollers under the watchful eyes of border patrol agents – were greeted by hours-long wait times.
The ban, imposed by then president Donald Trump in early 2020 and upheld by his successor Joe Biden, had become emblematic of the upheavals caused by the pandemic.
Trump initially closed US borders to China travelers in February, 2020.
A month later he extended the ban to large swathes of the world, including the European Union, Britain, India and Brazil, in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
Overland visitors from Mexico and Canada were also banned.

At Frankfurt airport in Germany, Hans Wolf was queueing at the check-in counter, visibly moved, bound for Houston to visit his son whom he had not seen in two years.

“We booked the first flights in March and had since then rebooked I think 28 times, and spent so much money in between that this flight must really be profitable now,” he said.
At London Heathrow Airport, two planes from rivals British Airways and Virgin Atlantic heading to New York took off at the same time from parallel runways to mark the occasion.
To cope with surging demand, airlines have increased the number of transatlantic flights and plan to use larger planes.

Along the US-Mexico border, many cities have faced economic struggles due to anti-Covid trade restrictions.

Reflecting widespread anticipation of the reopening, currency exchange centers in Mexico’s Ciudad Juarez were hit by a shortage of dollars.
The Ciudad Juarez government has implemented a special system to direct traffic, with portable toilets on the three bridges crossing into the United States “as waiting times of up to four hours are estimated,” said the local director of road safety, Cesar Alberto Tapia.
In the United States’ northern neighbor, seniors will be able to resume their annual trips to Florida to escape the bitter Canadian winters.
Before sunrise, passenger cars and motor homes lined up on Rainbow Bridge straddling the border at Niagara Falls.
But the cost of PCR tests that Canada requires for cross-border travel – up to $250 – can be prohibitive.
Ann Patchett, an Ontario resident, told the Ottawa Citizen it will cost $500 for her and her husband to go south to visit family.
“Do you want to hug your children? Do you want to tuck your grandchildren into bed?” she asked. “It’s very frustrating.”
- Some restrictions remain -
Lifting the travel ban will affect more than 30 countries, but entry into the United States will not be unregulated.
US authorities plan to closely monitor travelers’ vaccination status and will still require them to present negative Covid tests.
The reopening will happen in two phases.
Air passengers into the US are required to be fully vaccinated and tested within three days of travel, and airlines will have to implement a contact tracing system
Starting Monday, vaccines will be required for “non-essential” trips – such as family visits or tourism – although unvaccinated travelers will still be allowed into the country for “essential” trips.
A second phase, beginning in early January, will require all visitors to be fully vaccinated to enter the United States by land, no matter the reason for their trip.
US health authorities have said all vaccines approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and the World Health Organization would be accepted for entry by air.
- Europe’s rising cases -
Washington has yet to comment on Europe’s recent Covid caseload increase.
The WHO has expressed “grave concern” over the rising pace of infections in Europe, warning that the trajectory could mean “another half a million Covid-19 deaths” by February.
But many, including House Republican Elise Stefanik whose New York district borders Canada, expressed a sense of relief at the US reopening.
“Finally, the day we have been waiting for,” she said in a video statement.
“We have worked hard on a bipartisan basis, and while this is far too late, November 8th is here and we want to make sure that this border re-opening is as smooth as possible.”

Crypto market value tops $3 trillion for first time

Bitcoin, the world's biggest cryptocurrency, hit a record-high $66,000 last month after taking another step towards mainstream status
London (AFP) - The world cryptocurrency market is worth more than $3 trillion for the first time, according to calculations Monday, as mainstream investors increasingly jump on board.
The value has reached $3.007 trillion (2.6 trillion euros), said CoinGecko, which tracks prices of more than 10,000 cryptocurrencies.
“The crypto market is growing at a mind-blowing speed,” noted SwissQuote analyst Ipek Ozkardeskaya.
“A part of it is speculation of course, but a part of it is real,” she told AFP.
“Crypto is now making its way to traditional finance and everyone is on board.”
Bitcoin, the world’s biggest cryptocurrency, hit a record-high $66,000 last month after taking another step towards mainstream status.
It surged back above $66,000 on Monday close to its all-time peak after a five percent jump.
Ethereum, the second biggest cryptocurrency by market value, hit a record high $4,768 on Monday.
A bitcoin futures exchange-traded fund, a type of financial instrument, launched on the New York Stock Exchange in October.
The ETF is a more accessible vehicle that puts bitcoin within the grasp of even more investors.
Some investors sees cryptocurrencies as a hedge against inflation, which is surging worldwide as economies reopen after pandemic lockdowns.
“Bitcoin is bouncing higher again, close to all-time highs,” Hargreaves Lansdown market analyst Susannah Streeter said Monday.
“The recent surge in the crypto… partly seems to have been caused by investors piling in, seeing it as a hedge against inflation,” Streeter added.
No more than 21 million bitcoin can be created, helping its price to trade way above its rivals, but trading of cryptocurrencies in general has shown to be extremely volatile with massive price swings a common occurrence.

Migrants massing at border with Belarus help, Poland says

Warsaw (AFP) - Poland on Monday said hundreds of migrants in Belarus were descending on its border aiming to force their way into the EU member in what NATO slammed as a deliberate tactic by Minsk.
“A group of a few hundred people are heading for the Kuznica border crossing. One group has already tried to cross the border, but the border guards have arrested some of these people,” Polish government spokesman Piotr Muller told reporters in Warsaw.
Muller blamed “people linked to Belarusian special services” for organising the migrant breach. He added that a Polish government crisis unit was due to meet later on Monday.
NATO slammed as “unacceptable” Belarus’s alleged tactical use of migrants to put pressure on the EU, saying it was worried about “escalation” on the border with Poland.
- Deaths -
The European Union accuses Belarusian strongman Alexander Lukashenko of facilitating a wave of migrants and refugees, mainly from the Middle East, trying to enter the EU in retaliation for sanctions imposed by Brussels.
Minsk has reportedly issued special visas allowing migrants to fly into Belarus.
The sanctions were imposed after Belarus diverted a flight between EU capitals in May to arrest a dissident journalist and his girlfriend on board, and for a brutal crackdown on the opposition.
Lukashenko has denied the charges.
Poland has sent thousands of soldiers to the border area, enforced a state of emergency in the region complete with a media blackout, built a razor-wire fence and approved the construction of a wall.
Caught in the middle, migrants often report being forced to cross the border by Belarusian officials and then being pushed back into Belarusian territory by the Polish authorities.
At least 10 migrants have died so far in the region, including seven on the Polish side of the border, according to the Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza.
- ‘Prepared for any scenario’ -
Poland’s defence ministry tweeted a video taken from a helicopter showing hundreds of migrants gathered on the Belarusian side near the Bruzgi-Kuznica border crossing.
Earlier Stanislaw Zaryn, a spokesman for Poland’s intelligence services, warned the migrants would “try to enter Poland en masse”, adding that “the group is under the strict control of armed Belarusians. They are the ones who decide the direction the group takes.”
“We are prepared for any scenario,” Poland’s interior minister Mariusz Kaminski said in a Monday tweet, adding that Warsaw had beefed up numbers of police and soldiers in the area.
Other videos, which were also published on Twitter by the Nexta Belarusian opposition media outlet, showed groups of hundreds – if not thousands – of people in winter clothing, carrying backpacks and walking along a road.
According to a geolocation check by AFP’s fact-checking service, one of the videos was taken near buildings in Bruzgi, Belarus, some 1.2 kilometres from Poland’s Kuznica border crossing. The signs along the road were in Belarusian.
Belarusian border guards confirmed in a statement that “a large group of refugees… is moving along the highway towards the border with Poland.”
Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya blamed Lukashenko for orchestrating a “hybrid attack” and called on the United Nations Security Council to “discuss this crisis” in a Monday Twitter post.
