FEBRUARY 5
Today’s Moon in Aries is assertive, direct, and straightforward. We want to start fresh and move on, and we have no interest in dwelling on the past. However, this Moon can be impatient and hasty, especially early today with its square to Mars and, later, to Venus. Still, this afternoon, the Aries Moon harmonizes with Saturn and the Sun, and it’s easier to pace ourselves. We can be excited about our personal plans. While we want to be the first to discover new things with this Moon position, it would benefit us to share time with others. We can enjoy increased clarity derived from a feeling that what we want and need are in harmony.

We're motivated by a strong desire to start fresh. A gut instinct to start something new is with us now, as well as the gumption to do so. Mercury is in Capricorn from January 25-February 14. When Mercury is in Capricorn, our thinking is methodical and our focus is sober and practical. It is easier to concentrate on the task at hand under this influence. Our conversations may be quite realistic or focused on business/practical matters. Our thought patterns and communication styles become more logical, orderly, and organized.
We are more able to sort out what is relevant and essential. Realism enters the picture, our speech is no-nonsense, and precision becomes important to us. Our survival instincts are strong–we’re interested in what will benefit us in the long term.

Our talents for creating artistic structure and form are enhanced, and our ability to form connections with people who support our ambitions increases.
We value enduring connections, reliability, and faithfulness. We take expressing our feelings seriously, and we take our time to warm up to others. We generally keep our “cool” in relationships. We’re steadfast and seek genuine, perhaps old-fashioned connections. It’s not a time for PDA, and we can be somewhat guarded and reserved with expressing our feelings or revealing our relationships.

Uranus transits Taurus from May 15, 2018, to November 6, 2018, and then from March 6th, 2019, until 2025/6. We approach money and personal possessions in new ways and learn to free ourselves from certain material constraints. Innovative ways to make ourselves comfortable emerge. We’re less inhibited about expressing sensuality, self-love, body love, and pampering. Above all, we’re challenging what we previously valued during this cycle.
There can be abrupt changes with money, valuables, possessions, and income that lead to a reshuffling of priorities or values. Income might come from non-traditional sources or ventures. In general, we’re bringing progressive ideas to the world of business. New ways of doing business, as well as making, viewing, and handling money, are likely. Our income and the energy we put into making money can be variable.
Romance & Relationships
Venus is in Capricorn from November 5, 2021, to March 6, 2022. Venus in Capricorn is a cycle in which security and stability in our relationships are paramount. We are more cautious with our emotions and somewhat skeptical of both our own feelings and others’ expressions of affection. Longevity is important to us under this influence.
There is a formality to Capricorn that can make personal expressions seem awkward and forced. However, this cycle offers us the opportunity to consider some of the practical issues of our relations and to work on making our partnerships work in the real world. A dose of realism in our personal lives can help us to feel more grounded and secure in the long run.
This week: Venus is no longer retrograde. It’s recovering from the retrograde cycle, however, and is in its post-retrograde shadow until March 1st. Slowly but surely, we’re finding that Venus-ruled endeavors, such as money, beauty, art, romance, and pleasure, are getting back to a normal pace.

n February 1st, the New Moon occurs in the sign of Aquarius, prompting us to make a clean break or a “fresh start.” We awaken our minds to a need for a vision, socializing and brainstorming, expressing feelings of friendship, and developing more objectivity in our lives.
This New Moon aligns with Saturn, suggesting a somber and unwavering determination to start fresh and, perhaps, some reticence involved. With its square to Uranus, unexpected or rebellious elements are likely. In the sign of Aquarius, friendship, brotherhood, group activities, social pursuits, group projects, trying something new, humanitarian efforts, or joining a group will be a strong focus. New beginnings regarding any or all of these matters are possible now.
On February 3rd, Mercury turns direct in the sign of Capricorn. It began the retrograde in Aquarius and, on January 25th, retreated into Capricorn. While Mercury is retrograde in Capricorn, we may have little tolerance for small talk and tend to express ourselves after much deliberation. Plans may be considered then reconsidered. We are in a good position to reevaluate professional or life path plans and goals. It’s also a fine time to explore what ambition or our reputation means to us. From February 3rd, information unclogs slowly but surely. Mercury begins retracing its steps, now in direct motion, and its shadow ends on February 24th.
On February 14th, Pluto forms a trine to the True North Node of the Moon. This transit intensifies our passion for making a difference, a change, or a connection. We can feel strongly connected to people or groups at this time. A powerful and intuitive sense of what people want or need can figure strongly now, for better or worse. The desire to make deep, long-lasting changes or overhauls to existing systems or attitudes is motivating now.
On February 16th, a Full Moon occurs in the sign of Leo. This lunation reminds us of needs we may have been putting to the side–there can be an urgent or sudden need/desire to express ourselves around this lunation. We are more powerfully aware of our creative, romantic, and expressive urges. Something is exposed or illuminated, prompting us to get in touch with those things in our personal lives that we may have been neglecting or putting off.
This Leo Moon is proud and intensely individual. It occurs almost exactly when Venus and Mars align, suggesting a creative, romantic, and dynamic element to our revelations.
On February 17th, Jupiter forms a sextile to Uranus, and is enlightening. We’re open to new energies, approaches, and attitudes under this influence. Fortunate events occur as a direct result of our willingness to entertain the unusual and think outside the box. This transit favors group activities, financial endeavors associated with groups or organizational efforts, online connections and ventures, educational pursuits, writing, publishing, speaking, and humanitarian efforts. Our outlook is positive and optimistic.
During this transit, we tend to view change and activity as favorable. We’re less tolerant of repetition and routine, and we’re resistant to obligations or limits to our self-expression. Good luck or money can happen unexpectedly, appearing in the nick of time. Jupiter forms a semi-square to Pluto on February 23rd. With Jupiter semi-square Pluto, something can subtly challenge our belief system, kickstarting a need for an attitude change. Or, we might have to face narrow-mindedness in others (or in ourselves). Attempting to force our beliefs on others will only lead to frustration. We might struggle between the desire to learn through experience and the need to follow the rules or our ambitions to succeed in the material world.

Meta adds 'personal boundary' tool after virtual world harassment

Meta stops avatars from getting too close to one another to thwart unwanted touching in its Horizon virtual worlds
San Francisco (AFP) - Facebook parent Meta began rolling out Friday a minimum distance between users’ avatars in its virtual reality Horizon network after reports of harassment, one of the thorny issues for its metaverse vision.
The “personal boundary” function in the immersive platform, where people can socialize virtually, puts a ring of space around users’ digital proxies.
“A personal boundary prevents anyone from invading your avatar’s personal space,” Horizon vice president Vivek Sharma wrote.
“If someone tries to enter your personal boundary, the system will halt their forward movement as they reach the boundary,” Sharma added.
The new function comes after complaints have emerged in press reports and in social media or blog posts of incidents of harassment.
“Within 60 seconds of joining — I was verbally and sexually harassed,” one user wrote in a blog of her experience.
“A horrible experience that happened so fast and before I could even think about putting the safety barrier in place. I froze,” she added.
The boundary function is turned on by default, said Sharma, who added users will still be able to bump fists or give one another high-fives.
Horizon already has an anti-harassment feature that makes an avatar’s hands vanish if it tries to inappropriately touch another virtual character, according to its creator.
Meta opened its Horizon Worlds virtual reality platform to the public in North America in December, in a step toward building its metaverse vision for the future.
Facebook rebranded itself Meta last year to move past being a scandal-plagued social network and toward its plans to build a virtual universe blurring the lines between the physical world and the digital one.
But critics of the social networking giant fear that certain mass phenomena observed online, such as harassment or misinformation, will be reproduced in these ultra-immersive worlds.
Horizon Worlds is far from a fully realized metaverse, which even Meta concedes will require years of work and significant technological advances.
But headset-wearing users in the United States and Canada can now gather with friends or others, play games and build their own virtual worlds on Horizon as long as they are 18 years old and have the proper equipment.
“It’s an important step, and there’s still much more work to be done,” Sharma wrote of the new safety feature.
Options being explored include letting people adjust the distance for their personal boundaries, he added.

Israel dispute erupts at African Union summit

African heads of states gather in Addis Ababa as Africa reels from a spate of coups and the Covid pandemic
Addis Ababa (AFP) - Palestinian prime minister Mohammed Shtayyeh on Saturday urged the African Union to withdraw Israel’s accreditation, bringing simmering tensions to a head as the 55-member bloc opened a two-day summit in Addis Ababa.
Even as the continent reels from a spate of military coups and the Covid-19 pandemic, the relationship with Israel is expected to figure prominently during the summit this weekend.
The row broke out last July when Moussa Faki Mahamat, chair of the African Union Commission, accepted Israel’s accreditation to the bloc, triggering a rare dispute within a body that values consensus.
As heads of state gathered in Ethiopia’s capital on Saturday, Shtayyeh called on the body to reject Faki’s move.
“Israel should never be rewarded for its violation and for the apartheid regime it does impose on the Palestinian people,” he said.
“Your excellencies, I’m sorry to report to you that the situation of the Palestinian people has only grown more precarious.”

The summit may see a vote on whether to back or reject Faki’s decision, which could yield an unprecedented split in the bloc.
Israel’s accreditation last year drew protest from powerful members, including South Africa and Algeria which argued that it flew in the face of AU statements supporting the Palestinian territories.
Earlier Saturday Faki said the AU’s commitment to the Palestinian push for independence was “unchanging and can only continue to go stronger”.
He defended Israel’s accreditation, saying it could be “an instrument in the service of peace” while calling for “a serene debate” on the issue.
- War in Ethiopia -
The summit comes as the AU faces mounting pressure to push for a ceasefire in host country Ethiopia, where a 15-month war has killed thousands of people and, the UN says, driven hundreds of thousands to the brink of starvation.

The conflict pits Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) rebel group.
It has precipitated a rapid deterioration in ties between Abiy, the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize winner, and Western powers who once saw him as a reformer but have condemned alleged massacres and mass rape committed during the conflict by Ethiopian and allied forces.
The fact that Ethiopia hosts the AU has made any intervention by the bloc especially delicate, and Faki waited until last August – nine months after fighting began – to appoint Nigeria’s former president Olusegun Obasanjo as a special envoy tasked with trying to broker a ceasefire.
On Saturday, Abiy praised his fellow African leaders for what he described as their “support”.
“Ethiopia’s challenge was internal in nature and a matter of maintaining law and order. But the solution of our internal matters was made exceedingly difficult by the role played by external actors,” Abiy said.
“I wish to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support, solidarity and understanding as we underwent these trying times.”
The African Union is hosting its 35th summit
TPLF spokesman Getachew Reda accused Abiy of asking African leaders to “turn a blind eye… or worse still, to praise him to the skies for killing his people at will”.
“Africa needs to say no to this carnage!” Getachew said on Twitter.
Abiy also proposed the creation of “an African Union continental media house”, criticising “negative” international media coverage of Ethiopia and the continent at large.
- Coup ‘resurgence’ -
African leaders are also preoccupied with a recent string of military coups.
Four member states have been suspended by the AU’s Peace and Security Council since mid-2021 because of unconstitutional changes of government – most recently Burkina Faso, where soldiers ousted president Roch Marc Christian Kabore last month.
Addressing African foreign ministers this week, Faki denounced a “worrying resurgence” of such putsches.

But the AU has been accused of an inconsistent response, notably by not suspending Chad after a military council took over following the death of longtime President Idriss Deby Itno on the battlefield last April.
Attendees will also discuss the coronavirus pandemic, with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is participating in the summit virtually, expected to provide an update on Africa’s response to Covid-19, nearly two years after the continent’s first case was detected in Egypt.
As of January 26, only 11 percent of Africa’s more than one billion people had been fully vaccinated, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

Cyclone Batsirai nears Madagascar, 'widespread damage' feared

Cyclone Batsirai is set to hit eastern Madagascar after passing Mauritius and La Reunion
Vatomandry (Madagascar) (AFP) - Powerful Cyclone Batsirai was closing in on eastern Madagascar Saturday as residents sought secure shelter or reinforced their roofs with sandbags after warnings that “widespread damage” was feared.
Batsirai is expected to lash the eastern parts of the cyclone-prone Indian ocean island with powerful winds and torrential rains at around 8pm (1700 GMT) on Saturday, according to the country’s national weather forecasters.
It will make landfall in Mananjary district, more than 530 kilometres (310 miles) southeast of the capital Antananarivo, as a “tropical cyclone or intense cyclone at around 8pm local time,” said Meteo Madagascar.
By that time, the wind speed is forecast to be 165 kilometres per hour (102 miles per hour).
“Significant and widespread damage is therefore feared,” warned the metereological services.
The Meteo-France weather service had earlier warned of winds of up to 260 kilometres per hour (162 miles per hour) and waves as high as 15 metres (50 feet).
It said Batsirai would likely make landfall as an intense tropical cyclone, “presenting a very serious threat to the area” after passing Mauritius and drenching the French island of La Reunion with torrential rain for two days.
Residents hunkered down before the storm made landfall in the impoverished country still recovering from the deadly Tropical Storm Ana late last month.
- ‘Help us’ -
In the eastern coastal town of Vatomandry more than 200 people were crammed in one room in a Chinese-owned concrete building while waiting for Batsirai to hit.
Families slept on mats or mattresses.

Community leader Thierry Louison Leaby lamented the lack of clean water after the water utility company turned off supplies ahead of the cyclone.
“People are cooking with dirty water,” he said, amid fears of a diarrhoea outbreak.
Outside plastic dishes and buckets were placed in a line to catch rainwater dripping from the corrugated roofing sheets.
“The government must absolutely help us. We have not been given anything,” he said.
Residents who chose to remain in their homes used sandbags and yellow jerrycans to buttress their roofs.
Other residents of Vatomandry were stockpiling supplies in preparation for the storm.
“We have been stocking up for a week, rice but also grains because with the electricity cuts we can not keep meat or fish,” said Odette Nirina, 65, a hotelier in Vatomandry.
“I have also stocked up on coal. Here we are used to cyclones,” she told AFP.
Gusts of winds of more than 50km/h pummelled Vatomandry Saturday morning, accompanied by intermittent rain.
- ‘We are very nervous’ -
The United Nations said it was ramping up its preparedness with aid agencies, placing rescue aircraft on standby and stockpiling humanitarian supplies.

The impact of Batsirai on Madagascar is expected to be “considerable”, Jens Laerke, spokesman for the UN’s humanitarian organisation OCHA, told reporters in Geneva on Friday.
At least 131,000 people were affected by Ana across Madagascar in late January. At least 58 people were killed, mostly in the capital Antananarivo. The storm also hit Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, causing dozens of deaths.
The UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) pointed to estimates from national authorities that some 595,000 people could risk being directly affected by Batsirai, and 150,000 more might be displaced due to new landslides and flooding.
“We are very nervous,” Pasqualina Di Sirio, who heads the WFP’s programme in Madagascar, told reporters by video-link from the island.
Search and rescue teams have been placed on alert.
Inland in Ampasipotsy Gare, sitting on top of his house, Tsarafidy Ben Ali, a 23-year-old coal seller, held down corrugated iron sheets on the roof with large bags filled with soil.
“The gusts of wind are going to be very strong. That’s why we’re reinforcing the roofs,” he told AFP.
The storm poses a risk to at least 4.4 million people in one way or another, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said.
