De Ptolémée (né vers 90 après J.-C. à Ptolémaïs d’Hermias, dans la Thébaïde d’Égypte, mort à Canope vers 170), on ne retient souvent que le système astronomique qui fait de la Terre le centre de l’Univers. Et pourtant, cinq siècles avant lui, Aristarque de Samos avait émis l’hypothèse que la terre tournait sur elle-même autour du soleil.

Mais Ptolémée est d’abord un mathématicien. Les pages de sa Syntaxe mathématique, plus connue sous le nom d’Almageste (Le grand traité), reprennent partie les données et observations d’un autre astronome alexandrin, Hipparque de Nicée. Dans son Traité d’astrologie, Claude Ptolémée nous transmet le résultat de plus de sept siècles de science grecque.

Le Tetrabiblos fut l’ouvrage le plus célèbre de l’Antiquité. Il exerça et exerce encore une grande influence dans l’étude des corps célestes de la sphère sublunaire.

Putin, Italian firms talk business despite Ukraine tensions

The Italian government asked firms in which the state has a stake not to take part in the videoconference with Putin

Rome (AFP) - Russian President Vladimir Putin spent more than two hours Wednesday in a virtual meeting with top Italian executives, despite Rome’s opposition to the event due to escalating tensions over Ukraine.

More than 16 companies, including energy giant Enel, insurer Generali and tyre manufacturer Pirelli took part in the meeting organised by the Italian-Russian Chamber of Commerce. Energy firm Eni told AFP it had decided Tuesday to withdraw.

According to Russian news agencies, Putin hailed Italy as one of Moscow’s “main economic partners” and amid worries over soaring gas prices, said Russia was a “reliable supplier”.

The meeting was planned in November by the chamber, which seeks to boost business and investment ties between the eurozone’s third-largest economy and Russia. According to the group, more than 500 Italian companies are active in Russia.

But it comes just as the United States and other Western powers have warned Moscow it risks punishing economic sanctions if it moves ahead with what they fear is an imminent invasion of Ukraine.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s government asked firms in which the Italian state has a stake not to take part in the meeting, according to a source close to one participant. The Italian state is the largest shareholder in Enel.

An Italian government official told AFP: “The meeting is of a private nature and no member of the Italian government will take part.”

The chamber said it was the first time Putin had directly addressed an Italian business delegation.

Business leaders posed questions to and raised issues directly with Putin, “thus creating a debate, without political rhetoric” on trade issues, the economy, and industrial policy, among other topics, it said in a statement.

Eight Russian government ministers, including those from agriculture and economic development, accompanied Putin in the meeting.

Putin said he was “willing to develop cooperation between the two countries and to attract Italian business… by creating favourable and stable conditions”, the chamber’s statement read.

Italy, which is heavily dependent on Russian gas, has a chronic trade deficit with Russia.

Gas prices have soared this winter, a surge thought to be partly due to a particularly cold winter and a return to economic activity after the pandemic.

But Moscow is also suspected of taking advantage of the tensions on the world market to limit supply and drive up prices.

“Our country is a reliable supplier of energy to Italian consumers,” Putin told the meeting, according to Russian news agencies.

He said Italian energy firms continue to work with Russia’s Gazprom on the basis of long-term contracts, “and can currently buy gas at prices well below those of the market”.

He added that despite the pandemic and the “volatility” of the global economy, “our countries have managed to maintain economic cooperation at a relatively high level”.

Putin also complained that “contacts and business travel are hampered” by the lack of an EU-Russia deal to recognise coronavirus vaccines.

NATO on Monday said it was sending jets and ships to bolster its eastern European flank, as the United States and European Union looked to coordinate a tough response to Russia if it invades Ukraine.

Italy’s defence minister said Wednesday his country would uphold its commitments to the alliance while underlining the need for dialogue with Moscow for a peaceful solution in Ukraine.

Unlike most of its Western neighbours, Italy has historically relatively friendly ties with Putin, backed by strong, long-standing investments by Italian corporations in Russia.

Since becoming prime minister of Italy in February 2021, Draghi has stressed that Italy is firmly on the side of the European Union and NATO.

Stocks rally before key Fed update, oil hits $90

London (AFP) - European and US stock markets powered higher Wednesday, recovering further from recent sharp losses, as traders await the outcome of a key Federal Reserve policy meeting.

Meanwhile, the main international oil contract hit $90 per barrel amid continued geopolitical tensions.

Wall Street’s main indices snapped higher Wednesday, rebounding from Tuesday’s losses, with the Dow up 1.1 percent in late morning trading.

Europe’s major indices also ended the day with strong gains.

After weeks of uncertainty, the US central bank delivers Wednesday its views on the state of the world’s top economy and how officials plan to tackle decades-high inflation without knocking its recovery off course.

While Fed boss Jerome Powell has pledged that interest rate rises would be carefully calibrated, the prospect of higher borrowing costs has rattled markets across the world.

Most key indices have been deep in the red from the start of the year – with Wall Street particularly hard hit.

Powell’s comments Wednesday will be pored over for signs of the Fed’s plans, which most commentators believe include a first hike in March.

“The big question going into this meeting for traders and investors is whether the Fed will increase… four times this year and when the first interest rate hike will take place,” said Naeem Aslam, chief market analyst at Avatrade.

- Market buzz -

Part of the market’s exuberance may also be speculation that Powell may tone down his remarks about the need to aggressively raise interest rates.

“There is even some buzz that Fed Chair Powell won’t sound as hawkish as feared when he holds his press conference,” said analyst Patrick J. O’Hare at Briefing.com.

“That view may come back to bite the market,” he added.

Despite recent stock market volatility, analysts believe investors remain relatively upbeat about the prospects for the global economy once the current wave of the Covid-19 pandemic wanes.

“Providing (a) boost to the stock markets is optimism that the economic recovery is going to speed up in the months ahead,” said Fawad Razaqzada at ThinkMarkets.

Pent up demand for holiday travel will be unleashed as “travel restrictions continue to ease across Europe as Omicron cases decline and more people get double or triple vaccinated,” he added.

Nevertheless, authorities are currently downgrading growth forecasts as the impact of the Omicron variant becomes clear.

Germany on Wednesday trimmed its 2022 growth forecast to 3.6 percent, down from 4.1 percent.

The International Monetary Fund on Tuesday lowered its forecast for global growth by half a point to 4.4 percent due to the Omicron variant and geopolitical tensions.

- Oil risk premium -

Included in those tensions is the standoff on the Ukraine-Russia border, with Moscow building up troop numbers and the West led by the United States warning the risk of an invasion “remains imminent” and urging its citizens to leave Ukraine.

The West has threatened to impose severe sanctions on Russia in case it goes forward with an invasion.

Those tensions helped push the price of Brent crude above $90 for the first time since October 2014.

“The fundamentals (of supply and demand) remain bullish for oil prices and the prospect of a Russian invasion of Ukraine will only increase the risk premium,” OANDA analyst Craig Erlam told AFP.

“With the price now above $90 and gathering momentum once more, it may just be a matter of time until it’s flirting with $100.”
