Djokovic held at airport for eight hours 'mostly incommunicado': lawyers

The vaccine-sceptic tennis ace was detained on arrival in Australia earlier this week
Melbourne (AFP) - Australian border agents held tennis superstar Novak Djokovic for eight hours at Melbourne airport, mostly incommunicado, before cancelling his visa and sending him to a detention centre, his lawyers said Saturday.
Djokovic secured a Covid-19 vaccine exemption from Tennis Australia and the Australian government because he had tested positive for the virus in December, which should have qualified him for entry, the lawyers argued.
“The date of the first positive Covid PCR test was recorded on 16 December 2021,” his legal team said in a 32-page submission ahead of a federal court hearing Monday to appeal the visa decision.
But pictures shared by the Belgrade tennis federation last year showed Djokovic at a young players event in the city on December 17, the day after his lawyers said he tested positive for the virus.
The federation reported in a statement that Djokovic had handed over cups and prizes to the best young players in 2021 at a pandemic restricted event.
They also shared several photos of the world number one posing with the federation’s officials and about 20 young players. No one was wearing a mask.
Djokovic had asked for time to rest and consult his legal team the following morning after landing in Melbourne on Wednesday night, his lawyers said.
But after a border official initially agreed, his superiors successfully pressured Djokovic to allow them to take an immediate decision on his visa, the lawyers said.
Foreigners are still mostly banned from travel to Australia, and those granted entry must be fully vaccinated or have a medical exemption.
The tennis star has been held since Thursday morning in a Melbourne detention centre “notwithstanding his requests to be moved” to another facility to train for the Australian Open, they added.

Although Djokovic has won a legal reprieve from deportation, it is unclear whether he will be able to play in the January 17-30 tournament.
If successful, he will be gunning for a 10th Australian Open crown and a record 21st Grand Slam title – a milestone that Spanish great Rafael Nadal is also chasing.
- ‘Unbelievable job’ -
In an internal video leaked Saturday, Tennis Australia chief Craig Tiley said his organisation had done “everything they possibly could”.
“There is a lot… of blaming going on but I can assure you our team has done an unbelievable job,” he said in a video published by the Sunday Herald Sun newspaper.
A second tennis player who was headed to the tournament – Czech doubles specialist Renata Voracova – had her visa cancelled after initially being allowed into the country, her government has confirmed.
She was also placed in the Melbourne centre and told Czech media the facility was “a bit like in prison”.

On Saturday, an Australian government source said Voracova had flown out of Australia. AFP photo and video images earlier showed a woman who appeared to be Voracova in a vehicle leaving the centre.
Djokovic, an outspoken vaccine sceptic, thanked fans for their support on Instagram: “Thank you to people around the world for your continuous support. I can feel it and it is greatly appreciated.”
More than 100 supporters and anti-vaccine protesters, who were banging drums and chanting “Novak”, rallied outside the Melbourne immigration holding facility on Saturday.

There was also support for Djokovic at an anti-vaccine rally, attended by hundreds of people, in another part of the city.
“I don’t want to see my grandchildren vaccinated,” said Margaret Beacham, a 67-year-old former primary school teacher.

“Novak is making a stand and it’s a worldwide opportunity for him to say something about vaccination status and how ridiculous it is.”
As much of the country tightened restrictions to battle an Omicron-fuelled wave, the state of Victoria, where Melbourne is the capital, posted a daily record of 51,356 cases Saturday.
The centre holding Djokovic, previously the Park Hotel and officially known as an “alternative place of detention”, houses about 32 migrants trapped in Australia’s hardline immigration system – some for years.
Detainees cannot leave the hotel and nobody is allowed in or out except staff.
The five-storey centre gained notoriety last year when a fire forced migrants to be evacuated, and maggots were allegedly found in the food.
Djokovic’s family have said the hotel is “dirty”.

Djokovic’s detention has sparked international scrutiny, with the Serbian government demanding explanations.
“Djokovic is not a criminal, terrorist or illegal migrant, but was treated that way by the Australian authorities which causes an understandable indignation of his fans and citizens of Serbia,” a foreign ministry statement said.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has defended revoking Djokovic’s visa.
“Rules are rules and there are no special cases,” he said.
Judge Anthony Kelly warned the star’s lawyers in a hearing Thursday that justice would move at its own pace through all necessary appeals.
“The tail won’t be wagging the dog here,” he said.

Las Vegas (AFP) - With personal health a rising priority around the world, the auto industry is on the hunt for new gadgets and accessories to make the car cockpit feel safer for the driver and passengers.
Items on display at this week’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) include air purifiers, car seat alarms and intelligent sun visors.
The objective is to transform the automobile “into a sort of health cocoon,” Christophe Perillat, deputy chief executive of Valeo said at a press conference at the show held in Las Vegas.
The French auto supplier’s wares at CES include devices to monitor drivers’ attention and air filters and systems that allow personalized climate controls for passengers.
The company’s filtration system for cars and buses clears out more than 95 percent of viruses, including Covid-19.
CabinAir and Marelli also showcased car air purification systems that could be installed inside the cockpit or in a cup holder.
Another offering by Gentex is a sensor composed of nano-fibers capable of surveying the air and identifying contaminants.

The latest generation of technologies comes after earlier efforts focused initially on the trucking industry, where lengthy periods behind the wheel marred physical health, said Carla Bailo, head of the Center for Automotive Research.
After developing more ergonomic seats, auto suppliers have begun focusing on tools to help drivers get ahead of other health problems such as cardiovascular issues, and to maintain driver awareness.

Some of the systems follow government requirements on autos.
The Italian startup Filo developed an alarm system for children’s car seats following a law in its home country intended to prevent kids from being left in the car on hot days.
The company was in Las Vegas to launch the technology for the United States, where there are dozens of casualties each year due to hyperthermia.
“With the hecticness of life, stress, et cetera, sadly, it happens more than we would like to admit that parents actually have on occasion lapsed… and they leave their children in the car,” said Rudolf Jantos, who works in marketing for Filo.
The company’s Bluetooth-based system will alert if a child remains in the seat when the driver moves away from the vehicle.
Other child-protection devices employ cameras, radars, vibration detection and weight sensors, said Mike Ramsay, a specialist in auto technology at consultancy Gartner.
Many of these products are not brand new, but are “becoming more practical in terms of costs and capabilities,” thanks to progress in algorithms and processors, Ramsay said.
These new devices have also been boosted by the rise of autonomous driving systems, which employ cameras and radars, said Jacques Aschenbroich, chief executive of Valeo.
“We had been focusing before more on the comfort of the seats and of the heating,” he said. “Now our clients also ask for more visual comfort and safety applications” based on these cameras and radars.
At CES, Bosch demonstrated its “Virtual Visor,” a transparent screen which detects the position of the driver’s eyes thanks to an internal camera and can darken only the portion of the windshield through which the sun would bother the driver, leaving the rest unobstructed.
“The key point is to use technology to really improve the customer experience, not to seem invasive,” Bailo said.
“There’s a fine line between ‘we’re trying to keep you safe, we’re trying to keep you healthy,’ and ‘we’re watching what you’re doing.’”

Kazakhstan detains ex-security chief on suspicion of treason

Protests over rising fuel prices erupted into violence in Kazakhstan's Almaty this week
Almaty (Kazakhstan) (AFP) - Kazakhstan said Saturday its former security chief had been arrested for suspected treason during days of unrest, as Russia hit back at US criticism of its deployment of troops to the crisis-hit country.
News of the detention of Karim Masimov, a former prime minister and longtime ally of Kazakhstan’s ex-leader Nursultan Nazarbayev, comes amid speculation of a power struggle in the ex-Soviet Central Asian nation.
The domestic intelligence agency, the National Security Committee (KNB), announced that Masimov had been detained on Thursday on suspicion of high treason.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev sacked Masimov earlier this week after protests over rising fuel prices erupted into widespread violence, with dozens killed and government buildings in the largest city Almaty stormed and set ablaze.
Tokayev told Russian President Vladimir Putin in a “lengthy” phone call that the situation in the country was stabilising, the Kremlin said Saturday, and thanked the Moscow-led Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) for sending troops to help deal with the unrest.
The CSTO has been dispatching several thousand troops to Kazakhstan, including Russian paratroopers, who have been securing strategic sites.
Tokayev says the deployment will be temporary, but US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned on Friday that Kazakhstan may have trouble getting them out.
“I think one lesson in recent history is that once Russians are in your house, it’s sometimes very difficult to get them to leave,” Blinken told reporters.

The Russian foreign ministry slammed his comments as a “boorish” attempt “to make a funny joke today about the tragic events in Kazakhstan”.
“When Americans are in your house, it can be difficult to stay alive, not being robbed or raped,” it alleged.
Tensions between Moscow and the West are at post-Cold War highs over fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, with talks between Russia and the US to take place in Geneva on Monday.
Authorities in Kazakhstan said Friday that the situation was largely under control, but Tokayev issued a shoot-to-kill order and rejected any negotiations with protesters.
An AFP correspondent in Almaty said the city was quiet but tense on Saturday, with security forces firing warning shots at anyone approaching a central square.
Masimov, 56, twice served as Nazarbayev’s prime minister and had been head of the KNB since 2016.

He was fired at the height of the unrest on Wednesday, when Tokayev also took over from Nazarbayev as head of the powerful security council.
Nazarbayev’s spokesman Aidos Ukibay on Saturday denied rumours the ex-president had left the country and said he was urging Kazakhs to “rally around the president”.
Denouncing those spreading “knowingly false and speculative information,” he said the ex-leader was in the capital Nur-Sultan and in “direct contact” with Tokayev.
In a hardline address to the nation on Friday, Tokayev said 20,000 “armed bandits” had attacked Almaty and authorised his forces to shoot to kill without warning.
The initial cause of the protests was a spike in fuel prices but a government move to lower the prices and the sacking of the cabinet failed to stop demonstrations continuing.

The violence erupted when police fired tear gas and stun grenades at thousands protesting in Almaty late on Tuesday.
The next day protesters stormed government buildings including the city administration headquarters and presidential residence, setting them ablaze, and a nationwide state of emergency was declared.
The interior ministry said 26 “armed criminals” had been killed in the unrest.
It said 18 security officers had been killed and more than 740 wounded.

More than 4,000 people have been detained, including some foreigners, the ministry says.
The full picture of the chaos has often been unclear, with widespread disruptions to communications including days-long internet shutdowns.
Flights into the country have been repeatedly cancelled and Almaty’s airport said it would remain closed to civilian planes until at least Monday.
In Almaty, few people were out on the streets on Saturday.
The military continued to guard the square adjacent to the burnt-out mayor’s office, firing warning shots whenever passersby were slow to heed instructions to stay away.
Pensioner Leonid Kiselyev, 68, said his car had been hit by gunfire at around 8:30 am as he drove past, showing a bullet that had pierced the boot.
“Yesterday it was calm so I drove here,” said a shaken Kiselyev, standing in a long queue at a petrol station.
Israel’s foreign ministry said a 22-year-old Israeli citizen who had been living in Kazakhstan for several years was killed by gunfire on Friday night.
Much of the public anger appeared directed at Nazarbayev, who is 81 and had ruled Kazakhstan since 1989 before handing over power.
Many protesters shouted “Old Man Out!” in reference to Nazarbayev, and a statue of him was torn down in the southern city of Taldykorgan.
Critics have accused him and his family of staying in control behind the scenes and accumulating vast wealth at the expense of ordinary citizens.
