Le solstice d’hiver ou le jour le plus court de l’année.
Le solstice d’hiver correspond au moment où la durée du jour est la plus courte de l’année. Cette année, le solstice d’hiver aura lieu le 21 décembre 2021 à 16h59 exactement, il correspond également au moment où le Soleil entre dans le signe du Capricorne.
Comprendre le phénomène du solstice.
L’origine étymologique du mot solstice signifie que “le Soleil s’arrête”. Cette origine provient du fait que deux fois par an, le Soleil dans son mouvement apparent sur l’écliptique, atteint sa plus forte déclinaison boréale ou australe. De notre point de vue, c’est comme si le Soleil, après avoir atteint sa position la plus haute ou la plus basse, s’arrêtait un instant pour reprendre son mouvement dans l’autre sens. Un peu comme un balancier d’horloge qui arrivant au bout de sa course, se stabilise l’espace d’un court instant avant de repartir dans l’autre sens.
Le solstice d’été et le solstice d’hiver représentent les positions extrêmes du Soleil lors de son déplacement apparent dans le ciel. En effet, à midi en hiver, le Soleil apparaît très bas dans le ciel (voir position (1) dans le schéma) alors qu’à midi en été, il est très haut (position (2)). Le Soleil mettra six mois pour se déplacer d’une position à l’autre; et une année pour réaliser un cycle complet.
Le phénomène du solstice a lieu deux fois par an, une première fois le 21 juin (solstice d’été) et une seconde le 21 décembre (solstice d’hiver). Mais la date exacte peut varier entre le 21 et le 22 suivant les années.
Pourquoi les jours sont-ils plus longs en été et plus courts en hiver ?
Le phénomène du solstice est dû au fait que l’axe de rotation de la Terre est incliné. En effet, la Terre ne tourne pas sur un axe droit, mais sur un axe incliné d’environ 23°. Cette inclinaison fait qu’au moment du solstice d’été, l’hémisphère nord de la Terre se retrouve penché du coté du Soleil (voir schéma de droite ci dessous) ; l’hémisphère Nord est alors plus exposé au Soleil et les jours sont plus longs que les nuits. En revanche, c’est l’inverse lors du solstice d’hiver (schéma de gauche, ci-dessous), la Terre se retrouve penchée du coté opposé au Soleil, l’hémisphère Nord est alors moins exposé au Soleil et les jours sont plus courts que les nuits.
C’est le contraire pour l’hémisphère sud, qui est en été lorsque l’hémisphère nord est en hiver et inversement.
Suivant la position de la Terre par rapport au Soleil, notre vision de celui-ci ne sera pas la même en été qu’en hiver. Comme le montre le schéma ci-dessus, pour une personne située dans l’hémisphère nord durant le solstice d’hiver, le Soleil, à midi apparaîtra bas dans le ciel. En revanche, durant le solstice d’été, le Soleil à midi sera haut dans le ciel.

Omicron spoiling US holiday economic comeback

Washington (AFP) - Holiday events have been scrapped in droves, thousands of flights canceled, cruises are now off limits: the Omicron variant has wreaked havoc in the United States, and the new year could see more issues exacerbating the worker shortage and the recent wave of price increases.
“We are starting to see some initial signs that Omicron is having an impact on the economy, mainly in the sectors where face to face interactions are most important,” in particular service sector businesses like bars and restaurants, Oren Klachkin of Oxford Economics told AFP in an interview.
The world’s largest economy had been poised to put Covid in the rearview mirror, but on the eve of the new year, the virus is once again playing the spoiler.
The highly-contagious Omicron variant, which appeared a month ago, is causing the number of new cases to skyrocket to record levels during the holiday travel season.
After 5,013 cases were reported in US territorial waters between December 15 and 29, compared to just 162 in the prior two weeks, health authorities warned Americans to avoid cruise travel.

“Even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading Covid-19 variants,” the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this week.
Economists say it is difficult to quantify the economic consequences of this new variant.
Moody’s analysts lowered their growth forecast for the first quarter because of Omicron, cutting it to around two percent rather than the five percent previously expected.
- ‘Magnified by Omicron’ -
The “fear of contagion” causing canceled events and the decline in restaurant reservations “are only part of the equation,” Grant Thornton economist Diane Swonk warned in a tweet, noting that employers face worsening manpower issues due to the rise in infections.
“This is not new, just magnified by Omicron,” she said.
Though Omicron appears less severe, it is highly infectious which is causing large numbers of workers to have to stay home
Rising case counts mean more workers in quarantine due to a positive Covid-19 test or contact with an infected person, and the resulting personnel shortage could paralyze a large part of the economy.
“We have already seen the beginning of what I – and clearly the CDC fears – will be a surge in those out sick and unable to keep even vital services going,” Swonk said.
The most visible impact was the thousands of flights canceled over the Christmas holiday as airlines struggled to get enough flight crews on planes.
In an effort to ease the strain of long quarantine requirements, President Joe Biden’s administration on Monday cut the recommended isolation period in half to five days for infections without symptoms.
Businesses nationwide already had been struggling to fill open positions, amid a wave of retirements and growing reluctance to return to in-person work amid the pandemic.
-‘Modest’ inflation impact -
The unemployment rate in November dropped to 4.2 percent, but participation in the workforce remains well below the pre-pandemic level. The government will release the closely-watched December jobs report on January 7.
Even before Omicron struck, American businesses were struggling to fill open positions
Oxford Economics expects hiring to continue and the economy to add 400,000 jobs a month in 2022, but “that doesn’t mean there won’t be shortages in some sectors,” economist Nancy Vanden Houten cautioned.
Some economists also fear inflation, which has soared to the highest rate in nearly four decades, will worsen if the variant further disrupts manufacturing and transport worldwide.
“Inflation in many services and energy prices could abate, at least temporarily but there is the real risk that variants are now more inflationary than disinflationary,” Swonk said.
But Mark Zandi, chief economist for Moody’s, said he expects the price impact of the new variant to be “modest,” unlike the Delta strain “which significantly fanned inflation.”
Supply bottlenecks have eased and “while more workers will get sick with Omicron than Delta, they should get back on the job more quickly.”

European stocks end strong year with losses

It was a bullish year for stock markets in 2021
London (AFP) - European stock markets closed lower Friday, the final trading session of 2021 – a year of strong gains overall as economies recovered despite ongoing restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
London’s benchmark FTSE 100 index fell 0.3 percent in a shortened trading session ahead of the New Year.
It shot up more than 14 percent over 2021.
The Paris CAC 40 index rocketed almost 29 percent this year, its best showing for more than 20 years.
Germany’s DAX had ended its year Thursday, having surged nearly 16 percent in 2021.
Wall Street, meanwhile, was flat in the first hour of trading.
“There’s no telling what today may bring, yet one can shout from the mountain tops that it has been a great year for the stock market,” said Briefing.com analyst Patrick O’Hare, pointing to double-digit gains in 2021 in the main US indices.
While markets soared in 2021, they seesawed in recent months as investors worried about rampant inflations, the prospect of an end to central bank largesse and the resurgence of the coronavirus pandemic.
“As we look ahead into 2022, the questions around inflation, growth and the… pandemic remain with us, while the monetary policy outlook is clouded by the potential for more (central bank) rate hikes throughout the coming months,” noted Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at IG trading group.
“Overall it still seems sensible to expect further gains for stocks, but with perhaps less of the exuberance we saw in 2021.”
The euro dropped more than seven percent against the dollar in 2021, its worst showing for six years, as the Federal Reserve scales back its huge stimulus programme and signals rate hikes in the coming months.
Oil prices dropped around one percent Friday, having surged more than 50 percent this year on a strong rebound in crude demand after a dismal pandemic-hit 2020.
In Asia, Hong Kong’s main stocks index finished with gains Friday, as surging Chinese tech shares helped it shrug off a weak overnight lead from Wall Street.
The benchmark Hang Seng Index closed up by more than one percent, on a day when many Asian bourses – Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand – were closed for public holidays.
The Hang Seng has been the world’s poorest-performing major gauge in 2021, down about 14 percent.
It follows a tough year for many Chinese tech giants, which have been battered by Beijing’s drive to rein in their influence.
- Omicron worries -
Global stocks struggled to make gains in the final week of the year as markets weighed government efforts to limit the health and economic effects of the latest fast-spreading Covid-19 wave.
The Omicron variant has led to record new caseloads of Covid-19 worldwide, but markets have remained sanguine in light of research suggesting the health effects will be milder than with earlier variants.
“Worries about the Omicron variant have receded, but the speed of its spread is tempering sentiment,” analysts at Charles Schwab wrote.
