Early today, Saturn’s final square to Uranus (while it transits Aquarius) perfects, creating some tension as tradition and innovation seem at odds. However, a Jupiter-Uranus quintile encourages us to appreciate the more unique elements of situations, people, and projects. The Moon leaves Leo and enters Virgo at 3:25 AM EST, and we move from a playful to workhorse frame of mind. The Virgo Moon’s square to Mars can point to some nervous tension or argumentativeness. Moscow (AFP) - A Moscow court slapped Google with an unprecedented hefty fine of nearly $100 million on Friday as Russia ramps up its pressure on foreign tech giants.
Moscow has piled fines on the world’s biggest internet platforms, accusing them of not moderating their content properly and interfering in the country’s affairs.
But so far fines on Facebook parent company Meta, Twitter, Google have stretched into the tens of millions of rubles, not billions.
However on Friday a Moscow court fine Google a record 7.2 billion rubles, ($98 million, 86 million euros), the court’s press service said on Telegram, for repeatedly failing to delete illegal content.
The content was not specified, but Russia regularly takes legal action for not removing content it labels illegal, such as pornographic material or posts condoning drugs and suicide.
“We’ll study the court documents and then decide on next steps,” Google’s press service told AFP.
Interfax news agency said that the massive fine was calculated as a percentage of Google’s annual earnings and was the maximum penalty for a repeated violation.
Meta – which has a hearing in court later today on the same charges – has also been threatened with a revenue-based fine.
On Thursday, Twitter was handed its latest fine of three million rubles ($40,000) after authorities started throttling its services in the spring.
In the past few years, the Russian government has used the pretext of protecting minors and fighting extremism to control the Russian segment of the web and began developing a so-called sovereign internet.

Ahead of parliamentary elections in September, Russia’s media watchdog blocked dozes of websites linked to jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, whose organisations have been banned in Russia as “extremist”.
The regulator also ordered Google and Apple to remove an app dedicated to Navalny’s “Smart Voting” campaign which advised supporters who to vote for to unseat Kremlin-aligned politicians.
The Silicon Valley giants complied, with sources telling AFP the decisions came after authorities threatened to arrest local staff.
Russia’s media regulator has also blocked dozens of websites linked to Navalny.
Earlier, during protests in January in support of Navalny, authorities accused platforms including Google’s YouTube and Twitter of meddling in Russia’s domestic affairs by not deleting posts calling for people to join the rallies.
President Vladimir Putin that same month complained that large technology companies were competing with states.
Russia has already blocked a number of websites that have refused to cooperate with authorities, such as the video platform Dailymotion and LinkedIn.
As part of broad efforts to bend foreign tech under its control, Russia in September banned six major VPN providers including Nord VPN and Express VPN.
Russia also introduced a new law demanding that smartphones, computers and other gadgets sold in the country come with pre-installed domestic software and apps.
Russia’s opposition accuses the Kremlin of using such regulations to further stifle freedom of speech and clamp down on online dissent.

Sydney (AFP) - Omicron’s rise has heralded another pandemic-tinged Christmas for billions, with Santa’s arrival and longed-for family reunions overshadowed by the prospect of yet more Covid restrictions.
Festive jokes about reindeer having “herd immunity” and millions isolating “Home Alone” may be wearing thin, but the emergence of the ultra-infectious Omicron variant means the pandemic isn’t going anywhere.
For a second straight year, surging infections have complicated yuletide plans from Sydney to Seville.
In Bethlehem – the city Christians believe was Jesus’ birthplace – hoteliers expecting an influx of tourists have been disappointed. After a near-total pandemic lockdown last year, Israel’s borders are again closed.
This year, like last, midnight mass in the city on Christmas Eve will be reserved for a small circle of people by invitation only and celebrations on Friday were subdued.
“It is a bit surreal… there is a selfish part where it’s like ‘oh I get to see this place so empty’ but on the other hand you feel for the shops, all the money they are losing, it’s really quite tragic”, American student Hudson Harder told AFP.

In Europe, governments are reimposing misery-inducing safety measures that are draining the fun from Christmas for many.
The Netherlands is back in lockdown while Spain and Italy have made wearing masks compulsory outdoors.
And with the United Kingdom recording a record high number of Covid-19 infections on Thursday, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson suggested getting a vaccine booster shot as a Christmas gift for relatives.
In France, the government urged people to get booster shots just three months after initial jabs, down from the current suggestion of five months as it sought to fight off the fast-spreading Omicron.
- ‘Sliver of hope’ -
Still, Christmas gatherings will be easier than a year ago in many other places around the world.
Most Australians are allowed to travel interstate over the festive break for the first time in two years, bringing a touch of Christmas sparkle even as case numbers hit record highs.

“We’ve all witnessed the moving scenes of people at airports after months of separation,” Sydney’s Catholic Archbishop Anthony Fisher said in his Christmas message.
“In such dark times, Christmas is a ray of light, a sliver of hope.”
Pope Francis is still scheduled to deliver the traditional Christmas Eve midnight mass from St Peter’s Basilica.
Millions of Americans are also on the move during the busy travel days before Christmas, even as Covid infections with Omicron surpass the peak of the Delta wave and hospitals run out of space for patients.
However, thousands of them are set to face a grim holiday weekend, with major carrier United cancelling 120 flights because infection numbers had impacted flight crews and other operations.
And the spectre of getting sick was also rattling nerves, and threatening plans.
“I was planning to meet up with my family, but I might be positive for Covid, so that’s something that I don’t think is going to be happening,” Queens resident Maria Felix said as she awaited a test result.

In one sign of people’s darkened mood, one of the most popular shows on Netflix in the run-up to Christmas has been “The Unforgivable”, a less-than-festive tale of a murderer released from prison and struggling to win redemption.
Books on identity and slavery topped the New York Times bestsellers and a profanity-laden rant about a bad break-up led the Spotify charts – beating even Mariah Carey’s perennial Christmas hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You”.

But angst borne from a seemingly interminable crisis, long testing queues, cancelled flights and close contact notifications will not prevent Santa from doing his rounds.
The hirsute spreader of holiday cheer has reportedly been cleared for travel in Canada’s airspace after showing proof of vaccination and a pre-flight negative Covid test, Ottawa’s transport minister said.
Santa’s flight crew – including reindeer Rudolph, whose “nose shone red and bright (but) made sure he had no Covid-19 symptoms before taking off” – have also been given the all clear.
And Australian authorities said they were working round the clock to ensure “Operation Present Drop” goes smoothly.
“Our air traffic controllers will be guiding Santa safely through Australian airspace,” said aviation safety authority Airservices.
“He’s cleared to fly at 500 feet so he can skim the rooftops and deliver his presents quickly and quietly –- after all, his magical sleigh isn’t your average aircraft.”

Markets waver on Christmas Eve as Covid fears recede

Generally positive US economic data and receding Omicron fears cheered investors
London (AFP) - World stock markets wavered Friday in subdued Christmas Eve trade as investors mulled receding Omicron coronavirus fears, with European bourses wrapping up early before the long holiday weekend.
Asian equities mostly rose in thin volumes after Wall Street finished its trading week Thursday with strong gains on solid economic data.
The London and Paris stock exchanges ran out of steam in a half-day session with traders somewhat wary over more possible restrictions to curb Omicron.
“Markets … remain reticent today due to lower volumes as traders are away for a holiday period,” AvaTrade analyst Naeem Aslam told AFP.
“We believe overall there is still plenty of optimism about Covid vaccines – however, concerns are real that more restrictions may be placed ahead of New Year’s Eve to curtail the spread of Covid.”
Frankfurt’s DAX index had shut Thursday, closing the week with a 1.0-percent gain at 15,756.31 points.
Studies indicating Omicron infections are less likely to result in hospitalisation have increased confidence that the pandemic will have less impact on the economy.
Sentiment has also been buoyed by US approval of drugs from Merck and Pfizer to add to a growing arsenal of weapons against Covid.
“Omicron is looking more like a short-term disruption to the economic outlook and not a destructive headwind that knocks the economy off its course,” added OANDA analyst Edward Moya.
On Wall Street, the S&P 500 ended the last session before the long holiday weekend at a fresh record following a raft of mostly decent US economic data.
Commerce Department data showed consumer spending climbed in November, though at a slower rate, and new home sales rose.
Jobless benefit claims held steady from the prior week and orders for big-ticket manufactured goods climbed, though mostly due to aircraft.
Inflation, however, posted the biggest increase in nearly four decades, illustrating the delicate balancing act the Federal Reserve faces between reining in inflationary pressures and keeping the economic recovery on track.
Omicron “will create some slowdowns in the economy, perhaps some slowdowns of production which could add to inflation pressures in the short term,” Paul Christopher, head of global market strategy at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, told Bloomberg Television, adding however that the economy would work its way through the situation.
The optimistic mood carried over to Asia with most markets rising, although in quiet trade with several stock exchanges shut or on shortened hours ahead of the Christmas holiday.
